Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is founded upon a longer commitment to work in a shop and learn all the aspects of the craft and business of making and selling new, violins, violas and cellos.  Learning as an apprentice is more naturally embedded in the daily activities of a violinmaking shop.  This is in contrast to the learning environment of a workshop that is focused on teaching a more bounded curriculum.  During an apprenticeship, a young maker will learn sharpening, wood selection, wood preparation, violin making process, varnish cooking and application, antiquing of varnish, setup, shop management, and marketing skills.

Apprentices are encouraged to make their own instruments as well as participate in other shop activities.

Apprenticeship arrangements can be full time or part-time.  The nature, scope, and time commitment of a particular apprenticeship relationship will reflect the skills, level of experience, long-term goals, and economic situation of the individual applicant.
