I display this photograph, for it reminds us that most photos do not do justice to an important dimension of instrument varnishing and antiqueing, namely surface texture. The areas where glare is present reveals some of the texture found on this partiuclar instrument. Texture includes a combination of the wood surface telegraphing its contours throught the varnish, the nature and degree of polishing, as well as damage such as chipping, scratching, cracking, and so on. Compare this photograph with the third in this series and you will notice a significant difference!
